Curiosity Killed the Cat? (2) SUMMARYSalmans says complements can be taken the wrong way. And people even run the risk of being accused of sexual harassment. Ueda doesn’t see anything wrong with such remarks. And Alvarez says the tone and how well we know the person can be important factors. Ueda promises to be careful. And Alvarez complements him on his tie.  VIGNETTEUeda Shota: You can’t complement a co-worker on the way they look or drees? Chuck Salmans: Well, that’s a very delicate area. Some people think it’s all right if it’s clear you’re making a sincere complement as opposed to empty flattery or flirting. But you have to be careful. Such remarks can be taken the wrong way. In a worst-case scenario, you could even be accused of sexual harassment. Ueda Shota: My goodness. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with telling a female co-worker that she looks charming if she has new hair style, for example, or telling a male colleague that his necktie looks cool for that matter. I think people appreciate comments like that. Nancy Alvarez: I understand, Shota. I suppose a lot depends on how well you know that person and the tone you use when you pay them that sort of complement. Some people are very sensitive when it comes to comments on their appearance. I’m okay with that. But some people aren’t. Ueda Shota: Understood. I’ll be careful in the future. Nancy Alvarez: I like your necktie, by the way. Ueda Shota: Ha-ha. Thanks, Nancy. Lidia Grace: I think it’s also bad form to talk about your socio-economic status in the office. Up at the top Salmans says “Well, that’s a very delicate area”. He means we have to handle the situation carefully. You know, so that people don’t get upset or angry. Things like “Management and labor are in delicate negotiations over cutting wages”. Delicate can also mean fragile, easily broken. Like “Carry those plates carefully. They’re very delicate china”. sincere complement 心からのほめ言葉as opposed to ~に対立するものとして/~とは対照的に empty flattery or flirting 口先だけのお世辞や戯れEmpty flattery is insincere, just said to get something from the other person. You could say “I told Bob I really liked his idea. It wasn’t empty flattery. I do like it”. And likewise “empty promises! are just talk, we don’t keep them. Such as “He made a bunch of empty promises to help me find a job. But he didn’t do anything”. empty 口先だけの/空虚な can be taken the wrong way 誤解される場合がある/誤解されかねないCan be misinterpret. Imagine you gave a co-worker some criticism. You know, you suggested changes in her work. She gets upset. You think “Oh, she didn’t mean she was stupid but she took my comments the wrong way!” We also say “Don’t take this the wrong way” meaning “Please don’t misinterpret what I’m going to say” or “Don’t be offended”. You might tell a co-worker “Please don’t take this the wrong way, but your perfume is too strong for the office”. be accused of ~で告訴される/非難されるBe charged with some fault or crime. To have it said we did that bad thing. This can be a punishable crime. Like “He was accused of embezzlement”. Or “She was accused of sabotage. Or just unacceptable behavior. “He was accused of being lazy and careless”. Regarding that subject, on that subject. Ueda is adding more commentary, more information to a discussion. I could say “I’ve never been to Kenya, or anywhere in Africa for that matter”. appreciate 喜ぶ/感謝する tone 口調/調子Down towards the bottom, Alvarez says a lot depends on the tone you use when you pay them that sort of complement. understood This is a way to say “We understand what someone told us” or “Yes, we’ll get that done”. Imagine you’re told you have to submit these tax forms by Friday. You’ll reply “Understood. I’ll hand them in by Friday”. Alvarez: I understand, Shota. I’ll be careful in the future. From now on, on future occasions. Let’s say I get the date of a party wrong. So I say “I’ll make sure to double check the time and date in the future”. socio-economic status 社会経済上の地位 by the way ところでDown towards the bottom, Alvarez says, “I like your necktie, by the way”. This can be used two ways. One is stating additional information, the other is casually bringing up a new subject. Such as “Susan speaks three languages. So does Jacob, by the way”. Or in the middle of different conversation, you could say “Oh, by the way, when was the tax form due?” bad form At the very bottom, Grace says, “it’s also bad form to talk about your socio-economic status in the office”. It’s inappropriate, it’s against rules of conduct and decorum. Things like “It’s bad form to interrupt the colleague during a meeting”. Or “It’s bad form to ask about people’s child rearing plans”. child rearing 育児(「英辞郎 on the WEB」) decorum 礼儀正しさ/作法  WORD WATCHIn a worst-case scenario最悪のシナリオでは ゴガクルの解説より:「危機管理における最も重要な考え方で、予想される最悪の状況を考えてみることである。Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/103366  SAY WHAT YOU MEANsincereSomething that expresses a genuine honest feeling is sincere. Such as “I think his apology was sincere. He feels terrible”. payAnother way to say give someone a complement is pay them a complement. For example, “She paid him a complement but he didn’t say thank you”. pay someone a complement 人をほめる formAn action that is socially inappropriate or rude is bad form. As in “In Japan, it’s bad form to stick your chop sticks in your rice”. QUOTE UNQUOTEDon’t walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead. And prepare for the worst. There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. Don’t walk behind me; I may not lead. Don’t walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend. – Albert Camus
